What is PU leatherette?
PU leatherette is a faux leather made with a polyurethane (PU) coating on a textile backing. MEGA has a 100% polyurethane surface, a 100% polyester backing, a thickness of 1.3mm and a weight of around 550g/m².
Is leatherette the same as faux leather?
Yes. Leatherette, faux leather, PU leather, synthetic leather and imitation leather are all names for the same type of material: a fabric made to look and feel like real leather.
Is leatherette durable?
MEGA is made for heavy use: it withstands over 500,000 abrasion cycles, passes the 100,000-cycle Bally flex test and has high tensile and tear strength. It is ideal for sofas, chairs and high-traffic seating.
Does leatherette crack or peel?
Cracking and peeling are mainly caused by hydrolysis, when polyurethane breaks down with humidity and heat. MEGA has an 8-year hydrolysis resistance rating, which greatly reduces this risk. Cleaning with mild soap and avoiding harsh products also helps it last longer.
What is the best faux leather fabric for upholstery?
A PU faux leather with good thickness and high abrasion resistance. MEGA combines 1.3mm thickness, over 500,000 rubs and upholstery fire tests (EN 1021-1/2 and BS 5852 Part I), making it a great choice for sofas, armchairs and dining chairs.
PU or PVC leatherette: which is better?
PU is softer and more flexible, with a feel closer to real leather. PVC leatherette (vinyl) is usually stiffer. For sofas and chairs, a PU leatherette like MEGA is normally the more comfortable option.
What is the difference between faux leather and real leather?
Real leather comes from animal hides, costs more and needs conditioning. Faux leather has a similar look, costs less, needs no conditioning and can be cleaned with just water and mild soap.
Is leatherette waterproof?
The polyurethane surface does not absorb liquids, so spills wipe off with a damp cloth. This is why it is so popular in kitchens, restaurants, clinics and boats. Seams can let water through, so upholstery should not be left submerged.
Leatherette or fabric sofa: which is better?
Leatherette is easier to clean, does not hold pet hair or dust and is more resistant to spills, which makes it ideal for homes with children or pets. Fabric feels warmer to the touch, but stains more easily.
Can this faux leather be used for boat seats?
Yes. MEGA is suitable for the transport sector, including marine use, and complies with IMO RES MSC.307(88) Part 8. As it is antibacterial and antifungal, it is a good choice for boats, caravans, motorhomes and vehicles.
Is it suitable for clinics and hospitals?
Yes. It is antibacterial and antifungal and has passed resistance tests against urine and hospital disinfectant. It is suitable for chairs, examination couches and upholstery in clinics, hospitals and care homes.
How do you clean leatherette?
Wipe with a soft cloth, water and mild soap, using circular movements. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust. Avoid solvents and abrasive products.
Can you iron faux leather fabric?
No. Do not iron it and do not put it in a tumble dryer, as heat can damage the polyurethane surface.
Is this faux leather fire retardant?
MEGA has passed the cigarette and match tests EN 1021-1/2 and BS 5852 Part I, as well as the cigarette test CA TB 117:2013 / NFPA 260, used for domestic and commercial upholstery.
How do you sew faux leather fabric?
Use a leather or denim needle (size 90 to 110), polyester thread and a longer stitch of 3 to 4mm. Avoid pins, which leave holes, and use clips instead. A Teflon or roller presser foot helps the material glide.
Can you dye leatherette?
Leatherette does not take standard fabric dyes, so we do not recommend dyeing it. MEGA comes in a wide range of colours, so you can choose the exact shade you need.
Where can I buy faux leather fabric by the metre?
At Texland, our online fabric shop, cut to length from 1 metre. The roll is 1.40m wide, and free samples are available so you can check the colour and feel before you buy.
