What does "linen effect" mean on this blackout fabric?

The face of the fabric has the natural, slightly textured look of linen, while the fabric itself is a 100% opaque blackout fabric.

Does it block out all light?

Yes, the fabric is 100% opaque. To keep a room fully dark, make the curtains wider and longer than the window so light doesn't escape around the edges.

Do I need to line curtains made with this fabric?

No. It is already a blackout fabric, so you can make unlined blackout curtains with it, with no separate blackout lining needed.

How wide is the fabric?

The roll is 2.80 metres wide. You can also turn it sideways (railroad it) and use the width as the drop, making floor-length curtains without any joins.

How heavy is it, and is it stiff?

It weighs 300g/m², a medium weight. Unlike stiffer coated blackout fabrics, it drapes softly and is easy to sew.

Do blackout curtains help keep heat out?

Yes. The dense, opaque fabric helps keep rooms cooler on sunny days and reduces heat loss through the window on colder nights.

Which side of the fabric should face into the room?

The linen-effect side is the decorative face, so it should face into the room, with the back facing the window.

Can blackout fabric be shortened or cut to size?

Yes. It can be cut and hemmed like any curtain fabric, so you can adjust the length of your curtains or blinds.

How do I sew blackout fabric without leaving visible holes?

Use a fine, sharp needle (size 80 to 90), a slightly longer stitch and clips instead of pins in visible areas. Stitch slowly and avoid unpicking, as needle holes can show on blackout fabrics.

How is it sold?

By the metre, cut to order from 1 metre. If you order several metres, they are sent as one continuous piece.

How much fabric do I need for my curtains?

Measure the width of your pole or track and multiply it by 1.5 to 2.5, depending on the heading and how full you want the curtains. Then add around 20cm for top and bottom hems.

Which curtain headings can I use?

It works with wave, pencil pleat, pinch pleat and eyelet headings. We also sell curtain tapes to finish your curtains.

Can I use it for blinds?

Yes, it is well suited to Roman blinds. For roller blinds we recommend a fabric made specifically for roller mechanisms.

Can I order a sample before buying?

Yes. Free samples are available so you can check the texture, opacity and shade before ordering.
